How come the Aussies and the Kiwis still have Union Jacks on their

I think that Dutch law basically states that if you are born outside the
Netherlands, and one of your parents is Dutch, you have to apply for
Dutch citizenship around your 18th birthday (the actual cut-off day is
some number of years later). If you don't, you lose that right. (parents
can claim Dutch citizenship for their children).
I have no Dutch ancestry at all, but I do think it is unfair to deny
somebody their ancestral rights simply because of a decision their
parents took.
When former colonies become independent, there is typically a period where
the people living there can make up their minds as to what they want to do.
Unfortunately I was born into a "Republic" that wasn't a Republic at
all. By the time my parents got together and had me, it was already 7
years into independence.
Why are they treated differently?
We all come from the same bloodline.
I don't think Dutch law recognizes that concept. You can 'inherit'
citizenship from your parents, but not from your grandparents.
Again, this seems very unfair.
Most people don't get to chose in which country they can live. They have
to live in the country where they were born.
If your parents chose to live in SA, why is it Ireland's fault that you don't
want to live there anymore?
Not their fault at all, but the point I am trying to illustrate is that
the bureaucrats who make these decisions about who can and can't work
in any particular country, are full of ***. My cousins can enjoy the
freedoms afforded to EU citizens and residents, but I can't simply
because of some "line in the sand" (as you put it).
One of the biggest jokes aout citizenship, getting back to rugby
eligibility, is that of Clyde Rathbone who could theoretically play for
Australia and South Africa, if he wanted to, simply by virtue of
whatever address he chooses.
