Actually, it sounds a lot more like you don't have a clue what you're
doing
driving. How old were the tires? Were the pressures correct? How heavy
was the
rain? Was there standing water? Are you intimate with that ramp where
you spun?
Was there a good reason for you to be driving too fast for conditions
you rarely
see in a car in which you had no experience under those conditions?

Without aquaplaning, it's pretty damned hard to spin a Miata on the
street.

Beg to differ. I did it several times on wet but no standing water roads
in Tallahassee on the tires that came with Bozo. And I was not pushing
them
since I knew they were no good in the wet.

I don't recall whether you have said that you bought your cars new or
used,

New.

so I
have no knowledge of the age or condition of the tires you inherited. But,
IMO,
even most new cars come with crap tires; I tend to replace them with my
own
selections immediately.

But we're not talking Bertil Roos wet skid pad here. Once you have
established
the limits of your tires' wet traction, and conditions are not near the
freezing
mark,

It hardly is in summer and fall in Tallahassee.

a good driver should be able to avoid spinning.

Your statement above was "Without aquaplaning, it's pretty damned hard to

Get thee to a wet
autocross.

In one case, I was taking a corner in a double-lane one-way road in a
rush hour line of cars at exactly the same slow speed as all the cars in
front and behind me. It was not raining, but the road was still wet.
It was pure luck that I did not hit any of them.

Leon van Dommelen :) Bess, the Miata :) Bozo, the Miata :)

The only thing better than a white Miata is two white Miatas

I really don't understand the rather extreme points of view in this thread.
It's part car, part driving habits, part driver, part road conditions and
part tires. The OEM Bridgestones that were OEM on my '96 were dangerous in
the wet. Even with conservative driving.
