I really liked my Nokian WR (especially dry road handling)

perhaps Nokians competitors have caught up a bit in the past

I hope so, it appears that Nokian has discontinued all winter
tires in the size I need (195/50R15). :(
I'm not sure why the Nokian site recommends that size for an NB
Miata. Tirerack.com shows 195/55 which is closer to the OEM
tire diameter (0.1" over instead of 0.6" under). In the
winter, that 0.7" of extra clearance is a good thing.
Tirerack's first recommendation is 205/50R15, but I think I'll
stick with the narrower option for a bit more bite.
