Air bag warning light

I have a 96 Miata, have had it for 11 years , it has over 110,000 great
miles on it, and we love it. About 2 years ago the air bag warning light
came on solid. At first I worried some about it, then just got used to it
and have basically ignored it. A couple of days ago it started flashing,
instead of being on solid. It goes through a sequence of 6 flashes then
does it again, over and over. Now this upsets the wife a lot more than
just being on solid so I checked into the repair manual and it says that
I could have a bad driver's side air bag, a bad SAS module, the clock
springs aren't making good contact, or a wiring problem. Basically it
calls out anything in the system. I don't feel comfortable messing with
something that could explode so I won't be troubleshooting it. I just
wonder if there is a danger of it going off while just driving or is it just
not going to go off in a collision?
