You're in luck, there's only 486,973,128 things that can influence gas
mileage!
Here's a couple that are common:
1. driving habits. It's entirely possible for one driver to double the
mileage of another in exactly the same car over exactly the same route with
all conditions the same.
2. tire pressure and tire size. If the tire pressure is too low, mileage
will be reduced and if the tire size isn't stock, your odometer is not
correct and the mileage isn't what you're actually getting.
3. state of tune, engine AND chassis. Anything, repeat: Anything! not right
in the engine OR chassis will reduce mileage, bad spark plugs or wires, wheel
alignment, dragging brakes, etc..
Last but not least.... do you know the actual gas mileage you're getting?
Fill the tank and write down the odometer reading in a log book. Next time
you get gas, fill it up, write down the odometer reading and the gallons it
took to fill the tank. Do this for a month, you'll have a sorta maybe wild
guess as to your gas mileage, do it for 6 months you'll have a better guess
as to gas mileage, do it for a year and then you'll know your gas mileage
because that period will cover winter, summer, short trips, long trips, etc.
Good luck!
