reason I ask is I am considering finally drinking the kool-aid and
getting a GPS unit but am trying to decide between buying new and used,
and how much less a used unit would have to cost for it to be a good deal.

I'm thinking of the nuvi 500 but am open to suggestions as to other
recommended products (not locked into Garmin either, but I like buying a
"big name" so that I know support will be there in the future.)  This
would likely be used primarily in the car but could also be used
elsewhere (bike, hiking, etc.)  But primary use would be to navigate
unfamiliar areas in the car.

Garmin is offering a lifetime of updates for a fixed fee - around $130
as I remember.  It's a good deal IF you live and drive in areas where
new streets are under construction.  OTOH in the pre-GPS era many of
us drove successfully with 10 year old maps.  I've got a 755T with the
lifetime maps and it's working out very well.  Be aware that the
recent firmware upgrade had a bug which Garmin is fixing free of

I'll have to check that out - NoVA is definitely an area you'd want to
update regularly. I understand what you're saying but since i'm
starting to expand my territory into areas that I'm not familiar with
at all, I'm hoping that I'll be able to rely on the GPS more and more.
