If used commercially, the various size box trucks (straight trucks is the
actual term) require a CDL also. You don't necessarily need class A
license, but you do need class B. If you need class B, you typically GET
class A. In other words, what you call the box trucks wouldn't be moving
either. Oh, a few ryder rentals and u-hauls, but that would not make a dent
in the backlog of freight that needs to be moved.

So go on strike for better working conditions.

Then why don't truckers do it to get better working conditions and work
rules?

Simple answer is, it's practically impossible to organize millions of people
who live like Gypsies. Trucking is not just a career, it is a lifestyle.
If you want to organize a trucker's strike, it's not like you can post a
note on the company bulletin board saying "Strike Meeting, 5PM, in the break
room".

Translation: easily replaced workers.

Oh that's right, they all know the world would go on without
them.

Yeah, the world would go on without us. It would be a radically different
world, however. We'd revert to an agrarian society for quite a while. That
wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing, either. At least the U.S. has the
lion's share of the fertile topsoil, so we'd get by OK. -Dave
