Actually, like humans, there are smart animals and dumb animals. Not too
far from where I sit there is a forest preserve. The deer use the ped
overpasses to get across the major roads. Not only is there a surprising
lack of deer near the main roads, I have encountered them on the
overpasses that are also used for the bike trails.

Also studies in Germany found that placing red reflectors along side the
road greatly reduced road kill. It seems the animals see the red and
realize not to cross.

Another funny thing is a story of a friend of mine where a coyote obeyed
walk and don't walk signals. I've seen animals wait for a gap in traffic
like a person would when jaywalking, but never obey the signal.
