I know this problems sounds just like that old Microsoft joke - but the
sad part is that its real. :-(
The Intelligent Cruise Control is laser based (there is a camera for
the lane departure warning system, but I believe it is not used at all
by the cruise control system). It fires a spread of lasers in front of
the vehicle and can detect cars in front of you. If you come up to a
vehicle, the system applies brakes to slow your speed and maintain a
safe following distance. Once the car has increase speed or moved
aside, the car speeds up to its set speed. It also has what I call a
"panic mode" in which it detects a vehicle is too close and applies the
brakes while sounding an alarm to alert you to take over control.
Mercedes has a more advanced system in the current S class, and Lexus
has their version. It is fairly new technology, but when it works
correctly it is a great additional feature for any car.
I went out yesterday and purchased a small hand-held camera and
documented the system not working correctly on tape. Within the first
24 hours after getting the vehicle back and "repaired", my system
disabled itself numerous times, and didn't see a handful of vehicles
(Including a large box truck, a Lexus LS, and a Toyota Corolla). I'm
hopeful this video tape will help repair the system, or show that it is
a potentially life threatening failure and get the system replaced
under warranty (the car just turned 3 months old this weekend).
