My first accident....insurance and other hard questions....

Hopefully I can get some help here. Last night about 11pm someone
backed into my car and it was clearly his fault (though i doubt he'll
admit it...but i'll get to that). Basically, I was exiting a parking
lot with cars parked perpendicularly to me and all moving vehicles
(basically, picture a large airport parking lot, with lanes). Most
people have to back out of their space....he did that without looking
apparently, and slammed into back SIDE of my car (back because I was
just about past him when he hit). I'd guess my damage to be at least
$1500, but maybe more...don't know. His car was also damaged....maybe
$800(?).. We called the university police (this was on a campus), the
cop wrote a report-- (though i have no idea what it will say,
hopefully he will get the facts down....but he constantly claimed his
job is not to mention who was at fault!! (that sucks). Me and the
other driver exchanged insurance cards, then we left. I hardly made
any mention of fault, though i wish i would have been more direct to
ask the cop to please try to assess fault on the report (who knows when
i'll see the report...he said about 3-4 days i can get it
somewhere).....anyway, back to the main problems:
First I live in NJ but spend time in VA, which is where this happened.
I don't have collision. I haven't called my insurance company, but
i believe they have a rule that I'm required to call them. I do plan
to call them (it's now about 12 hours after the accident...i guess i
should hurry??), but without collision who knows what good that will
do. Any comments on all of this so far...I really don't know what
to expect...but some questions are:
(1) I have a $1000 non-refundable plane ticket already booked (from
last month) to fly in 3 days!!, and I"m supposed to stay for one month
(in asia). I hope i don't have to cancel.....I'm wondering how bad
it would be for me to just file the claim, give my insurance company
the phone number to get the police report, and then ask them to ??
wait until i get back ?? to discuss all this? I plan to fly from VA
and return to VA (though my insurance is in NJ...but they apparently
have agents/adjusters all over the country so that shouldn't
matter...it's a huge company.
(2) I plan to get an estimate today.(should I) ..but if I go to asia,
obviously i won't get anything repaired until i return...if I do go.
(3) The car runs fine, but the back-side is a mess, and the right
taillight is gone....
(4) I at first thought I should just contact HIS company and not mine,
but my company says they require all accidents to be reported (and it
would be bad if he contacted my company and i didn't contact my own
company!!). I just imagine this being a huge mess....my company
probably won't do anything (without collission) and his company will
probably deny it (he'll probably say he's not at fault).
(5) Will an adjuster look at my car (from my company)...If I go on my
trip, will it be a big problem for him to wait a month or 5 weeks? I
figure if the police report has to get sent to my company, that'll
eat up one week right there.....and maybe i don't have to worry about
my trip delaying everything....
Thanks for any comments....so far.
