Well, after maintaining over 100 Windows desktops and a few servers for
the past few years, I can say XP SP2 caused a fair number of problems
for me. That's the only patch that's given me problems on multiple
computers, and only one AU actually killed a system to where it
wouldn't boot.

I use AU on over 50 of those PCs, and never have problems with it at
all, other than the one system that was infected with spyware, and the
SP2 issues. In MS' defense, the SP2 issues were all network
connectivity for specific programs, but for network based apps it was a
real pain until the 3rd party vendor had an SP2 patch.

For me hardware usually dies before the OS dies. I have a bunch of
Win98 systems I never deal with other than to remove a little spyware
or get a new Acrobat Reader patch, until hardware dies.

But, I guess like driving and much else in life, what you see is what
you think is normal.
