Yeah, ya gotta be aware of where in the viewfinder the autofocus is keying on.
My camera has 5 distinct areas that the autofocus can be made to use,
switchable by a big round button on the back. Manipulate this right and the
camera won't focus on the wall behind the two people holding the trophies and
doing the handshake...

Once you learn what you're doing, auto exposure is just as accurate and a lot
faster.

Having had the manual lenses for 30+ years before getting this latest camera, I
did that a long time ago. Its cool to know it, and when you have the time to
set it up it is really useful. And if you practice like a gunslinger in the
noonday sun, I guess you could do that on the fly as well, but its a whole lot
easier with auto-everything... <G>

Its for the news photographer holding his camera up above everyone's heads when
taking pictures of the prime minister, etc., too.

Yeah, my camera has a selector switch between spot, center weighted, and
"matrix". Matrix is supposed to be the best thing since sliced bread but
there's good uses for center weighted and spot, too, in different
circumstances.
