Bulb life seems to depend on where they're installed. Mine don't seem
to last any longer than regular light bulbs.
As for efficiency -- that's only important if you have no use for the
"waste" heat that regular bulbs generate. If it's cold enough that your
heater is running, then the heat isn't really a waste at all.

Both one-way bulbs and CFs work just fine in three-way sockets. Just get
used to the on-on-off-off switching behavior.
