This is right up your alley. I would suggest that GLM haunt the swaps
and fleas for surplus iron - he should be able to do that for-cheap
but maybe not learn as much nor (certainly) take on winding his own.

All that I have are PP or I would offer for very cheap depending on
location (Canada is not so far away).
