Switching power supplies have their own issues when used
with power audio. They generate all kinds of
high-frequency spectra and are often a challenge to
shield. They are nowhere near as reliable as simple
step-down transformer supplies.
Inspection of several examples of modern equipment tell a different story.
**Not really.
For example, most inexpensive DVD players use switchmode power supplies so
that the product is largely universal for world-market power supplies.
**Well, yes, but their power consumption is in the order of 10-20 Watts, not
several hundred Watts. BIG difference. Reliability of SMPS is not as good as
a linear supply either.
The
switchmode power supply is on its own circuit card and somewhat spaced
from the signal/logic board. No actual shielding at all. Dynamic range in
excess of 90 db can be measured.
**Yep. Remind me about the impedances which surround the grid circuits of
tubes and their propensity to pick up unwanted EMF.
Having said all that, it can certainly be done. It would require serious
attention to shielding.
