Hi,

worthy still. please help
managed to pick this great amp up for free (with full system) but it
has started to play up.
one and sometimes both channels fuz and cut out itermitantly. It
seems to be worse at low volume settings and will usually cut in
during peaks such as kick drum beats or when the vocals start. my
best bet is perhaps a capacitor in the power amp stage has failed but
which one?
i have checked for dry joints as best i can and there also does not
seem to be any speaker protection relays that may be playing up.
any help?
Carefully re-solder all the joints you see in the set, and retry.
Sounds like a dry joint, and why you got the item for free.
So you can afford to take it to a tech, or afford to put up with some
long tedious and possibly silly advice here.
Maybe you can learn what we know, and fix it yourself,
but typical faults with old SS gear take some time to get used to, and
so be careful you don't fully stuff up the item in your attempts to fix
it
without any experience.
Got a full workshop manual with all schematics?

Cheers Patric,
just heard a friend of a friend was 'upgrading' and was getting rid of
his old 70s era system (tape deck belts and all was getting worn out
etc) so i went round and it was a marantz system in cabinet (RM3100)
so i snapped it up. offered him some cash but he was happy for me to
just take it away.
i tryed to get a tech to look at it but all of them just want to throw
it away "not worth fixing" is the way they seem to approch everything
these days. but im keen to invest a bit of time and money into it as
i love the sound.
I have tryed to get schematics and service manual but cant find any.
if anyone has some please let me know!
Please note the model is PM400 not P400 (typo)
These guys have the PM400 service manual for $15:

Took about 60 seconds to find with Google.

service. The last manual that I downloaded from them, after paying $14.98
US turned out to be written in German and consequently was of no use to me.
Several emails to them on this issue have met with no response and a dispute
has now been opened with user-manuals.com through PayPal.
