I've thought about doing a spot of recording and am thinking of
building a mic pre. I want to buy an input transformer and use a hi-Z
output because I will be recording directly (short cable) to a mono
pro tape machine. Any thoughts as to which is the better transformer
and whether a triode, pentode, or FET circuit might be better? I will
be using a Royer SF-1 as it is the only really good mic I own.
WRT transformers, in America there's Jensen, and then there's
everything else. For real fidelity, accept nothing less.
And in Europe, there's Lundahl.
Anything other than those two for high performance applications is
pretty
much a waste of time.
Graham. For Europe, two names are missing.
Sowter (UK) and Welter in Germany.
Both are excellent.
Sowter are quite good but not really in the same league IMHO. I don't know
Welter.
In the same way you did not know Studer or Lewo consoles :-)
You're making stuff up again. Getting twisted in your old age ?
I've know about Studer consoles for as long as I can remember.
Can one really give a reliable opinion not knowing anything at
all about 75% of the horses in the race?
I know about most of them, I simply don't rate them for a high end application.
I probably wouldn't use St Ives Windings either. So who uses Welter ?
