Yes but they don't always work as well. Look at the
coil-on-plug ignitions. The coils are too small to give
a really good zap.
Agreed.
Saab direct ignition here. No problems at all.
The Milan (Mercury-badged Fusion) I've been talking about uses direct
ignition (coils directly mounted on sparkplugs) as well. The advantage is no
high voltage distributor and negligable high voltage wiring.
When I was in high school, I cobbled up a VW ignition system with two
Onan generator coils-two plug, heavy affairs with a lot of lams and a
big zap-and two Mopar control boxes and sensors and a homemade plate
and reluctor in a dead Bosch 009 housing. Ran great. Then I went
around to the VW shops and tried to get them to agree to buy the kits
which I proposed to sell. Oh no. They'd have nothing to do with it,
because the troublesome stock Bosch made them a lot of revenue.
At that time, Onan made a flathead flat twin of 16-18 hp in aluminum
and cast iron. Someone built a tiny single seat canard airplane called
a Quickie. It went 100 mph (statute, 90 knots) on one gallon of gas
(avgas or car gas) per hour. 100 mpg! Onan sent them a cease and
desist, they wiped their hiney with it, and Onan quit making the
aluminum engine altogether. This was during the Liability Crisis that
Richard Collins, Peter Lert and J Mac got on their knees and sucked
several yards of Wichita weeny over and everyone at Onan figured they
would be sued out of existence. Of course they couldn't but they
pulled the aluminum engine anyway. Anyway, I ordered a case of coils
and got a call from Onan a few days later. I told them I was building
an aftermarket VW CAR ignition and they said, not with our coils you
aren't. They actually sent a letter out saying dealers were not to
sell coils more than one at a time. They were convinced I was really
going to put them in VW-powered homebuilts. What I told them was that
the Quickie used a motorcycle coil and not the Onan one, because of
weight, and I sent them a picture of the car. Did no good, but they
really saved me a lot of grief because it was not going to sell-the VW
people were in love with Bosch despite the fact it was a thorn in
their ass.
