Yes, that can be a problem... They tend to be expensive. But if you
use circuit boards, you might be able to make your own socket using
female contacts from a DB25 computer connector, or scrapped regular
miniature sockets. Or, if you file the pins of the tube a little, you
can get the pins to accept solder. Think of the tube as a glass IC. :-)
Be sure to cut a center hole in the board to allow the stem seal to
pass.

Two or three bucks is not expensive.
