You use meters.... That is the point. Less meters, variacs are useless,
potentially dangerous, silly, stupid... and so forth.
Otherwise, I agree, excepting the bit on tube rectifiers. Sure, one may
bridge in SS rectifiers, but they are not then tube anymore, are they?
And, to repeat, a TUBE rectifier won't pass current until 75%+/- of
filament current is achieved. And so forth.
