Re: Punching Chassis for Multi-section Mallory Caps

What do you folks use for punching a hole

I'd like to eventually build some professional
looking amplifiers, without putting the huge
capacitors underneath the chassis

First thing, I would not recommend using that kind
of capacitor for new construction. Those are meant
to be used as replacements on equipment where the
alternatives would be difficult, impossible or
just plain too ugly to use. As far as capacitors go,
they're no great shakes.

There are multi-section, clamp mount capacitors,
sold by the same folks (others sell them as well)
and made by JJ & F&T, that only require punching
a round hole and drilling two holes for a clamp.
They're much less expensive than new twistlocks
and better electrically, to boot.

However, unless there's some pressing reason you haven't
mentioned, I don't understand why putting capacitors under
the chassis would be a problem. If the cap bank is out of
sight, this opens up the possibility of using pretty much
whatever capacitor packaging you like. Since the vast
majority of new equipment uses SMD or PC mounted caps,
that's the type of packaging where you're most likely
to find the best new technology in capacitors being
applied. They're really not that big!
