Here is an accepted definition of transient response:

Note that it is the response that is transient, not the input signal. If I mean
that the response is transient, I say it is a transient response. What could be
more simple, or more elegant, than that?

Cool, but everybody else has long accepted that the meaning
is "response *to* the transient" rather than "response *of*
the transient", if I'm even following you at all.

You're obviously after something of interest, but I still
can't grasp what it is.

knowledge is a
social phenomenon, I engage in technical banter.

Much appreciated, too.

Neither do I believe there are many things more basic about systems than the
distinction between steady state and transient responses.

The interesting bits, to me, are that there is no such difference,
when looked at through the other end of the telescope.

There are differences between cases where dI/dt matter
internally (large signal) or not (small signal), and there
are differences between errors (between input and output)
fundamentally related to bending of the curves and errors
fundamentally related to "time-only" losses which make no
extra frequency components.

But seen through this end of the telescope there is no
distinction between steady state and transient. I'm a
tough sell on this... So, sell it harder!

eh?

Just plugging the new Zhang YiMou in hopes that it might
play in my little burg. Possible literal translations from
the Mandarin include "Riding alone for Thousands of Miles"
and "The Lonely Emissary in a Thousand Mile".

Big fan of the Fifth Generation filmmakers.

Much thanks, as always,
