Back to the matter: do You think that providing a separate power supply for
the gain+driver tubes is a good idea when fiddling with these big toobs? A
1000V B+, with a surge of maybe 1400, requires lotsa caps in series to
withstand it, while the driver tube (suppose an EL84 loaded with a 15K, 25W
thick-film resistance) would ask for "just" about 500. Sourcing this
voltage ot of the 1000V rail would be a PITA: 500V times (say) 40mA is 20W
of pointlessly wasted power and heat. A separate PS is a PITA too, but of a
lesser caliber I think.
