Decent success with car sub project

So with Earl's generous donation of a better-quality 6.5" component speaker
for my sub project, plus a cheap, toasted Visonik V107SX amp, I was able to
get better results out of my system.
The amp from eBay was as-is, but the seller had sold plenty of other as-is
items that were fully functional but I figured I'd take a $20 chance. I
plugged it in and out came a puff of smoke. I took it apart and found two
voltage regulators: one cracked in half from the original installation, and
another one melted. I found the equivalent parts from the local electronics
shop, desoldered the burned up/cracked components, resoldered in the new
ones, and it fired up perfectly.
I reinstalled Earl's Pyramid speaker into my existing box, ran wires out
from the original harness, and reconnected everything. Now there's great
response across the range. It seems that there's no longer a "peak"
response compared to the old amp/speaker setup. The sub has pretty good
response down to the 80's and maybe a little below that; it's hard to tell.
It's a far cry from the 160Hz cutoff from the old amp.
There were sounds that I didn't know the speaker could put out, which was
nice. I knew there was a little bit more on the lower end that the old
setup wasn't putting out because they show up when I listen to tracks on
earbuds.
The trunk was very cramped; I had to jam the new amp in between the spare
and the outer wall of the trunk. I couldn't find any other place to put it
without taking out the spare, which isn't really an option.
More frequency tests coming up.
