Just so long as you remember that your headphones ground
isn't actually ground, and if you accidentally lay them
on something that is, damage may follow.

No, the Maxim chip allows the headphone signal ground to be the same as
power supply ground. The enabling technology is a DC-DC converter (one of
Maxim's core product strengths) that provides complementary power supply
voltages to the amplifier portion of the headphone driver chip.
