Re: help fixing turntable

Record Player Problem.

My old 1971 (ish) record player has been siting around for many years.
I tried using the turntable and it would turn but not at the proper
RPM. It's about half speed I would say. I took it apart and found that
the motor runs and the driver part seems fine but there was all this
black gooey grease like substance around the turntable and the driver
gears. Is this suppose to be here or was this something that has
deteriorated into the goo substance that I am seeing? Is there
anything I can do myself to get this turntable operating properly
again?

I sure would appreciate any advise. Thanks
Here are some pictures of what I am talking about.

Thank you. Seems like a budget range product and it doesn't at a glance look
like a german design, rather like a japanese one. The transfer wheel does
seem decomposed. The japanese factories make many good products, but seem to
prefer that you get a new product rather than get a sparepart. Their service
horisont generally is 6 years, The first requirement to get a new transfer
wheel is the diameter. There is nothing to measure since it has decomposed.

I am moderately surprised in as much as I would have expected it to dry
crack and turn to pulver, but if an artificial rubber - ie. some kind of
plastic - and if lubricated with something with organic solvents in it then
strange things can happen. I can not from the picture rule out that it is
only covered in goo, in which case cleaning it may be enough to fix th
player.

Rega still made record players last time I checked. There are also second
hand bargains out there, I found a very worn but OK Pioneer direct drive a
couple of years ago, its main problem is a worn or crackly speed setting
potentiometer.

Kind regards
