So what, it's still old news. In fact, an FM-based microphone
system can easily be considered a form of direct SPL-to-
digital conversion. The digital format is called PRM (pulse
rate modulation) as opposed to the more common PCM
Pulse code modulation). There are straightforward algorithms
for converting PRM to PCM with no loss.
All true. PRM or PFM (pulse frequency modulation) are digitial coding
techniques.
Coding techniques according to NASA:
http://space.about.com/library/weekly/blacrop.htm
PAM: Pulse Amplitude Modulation
PCM: Pulse Code Modulation
PDM: Pulse Duration Modulation
PFM: Pulse Frequency Modulation
PIM: Pulse Interval Modulation
PPM: Pulse Position Modulation
PRM: Pulse Rate Modulation
PTM: Pulse Time Modulation
PWM: Pulse-Width Modulation
It is a simple fact that FM is not a digital system.
The transformation from a FM signal to a PRM or PFM signal is pretty easy -
clip or heavily limit the FM signal and put it through a single-shot.
