74 series logic IC's are NOT "audio amp IC's." They are digital logic chips. Very different animal and irrelevant to power amps.
Maybe he's talking about 741s and 748s? These are (were?) opamps suitable for audio circuits and available by the early seventies. Of course, they weren't much use for the output stage of a power amp, but I've seen homebuilt power amps from that era built around 748s and current follower transistors. Anybody remember Opamp Labs?
