Re: Microphone stand question (and rant, it turns out)

Questions, always questions.

I'm fed up with K&M mic stands. Every one that I've had or used begins to
fail almost immediately.

The problem is with the threaded bit at the top of the tube on the stand.
(For those who don't know, this is a separate piece, threaded nicely,
which
is crimped on to the top tube.) The crimping loosens, especially if the
stand has been used with a boom with a moderate load on it (say a KSM32
micing the low strings on a grand piano). This allows the mic or boom
mounted on the stand to rock, and eventually the whole threaded bit spins
on the stand.

Yes, I could get theem repaired under warranty, and yes, I could take them
into the workshop and smack them with a cold chisel or something and
recrimp, but that's not the point. I pay a reasonable price for these
stands, and don't figure I should have to repair them with such little
use.

Oddly, the chrome-finished ones last better than the black ones. But a
K&M
from the 70s is still fine, while the ones I've bought since New Years are
loosening obviously.

So, what's the current wisdom on mic stands, folding tripod base, that
will
stand up to the rigors of being used carefully on stage? Ultimate, On-
Stage, (The Manley Starbird is overkill.) somebody else?

Thanks.

Uh-oh. I share Hank's concern.
The Bogen-Manfrotto stuff isn't yet showing the same deterioration of
quality, though I think they just recently introduced something with plastic
parts. I would say, wherever you can use a light stand, as opposed to a mike
stand, do so.
