Re: ANOTHER POSSIBLE LAPTOP FOR MOBILE PROTOOLS SETUP??

Paul, bear one thing in mind. You cannot determine whether a laptop will work based upon issues such as these. The key factor is the way the BIOS is written. The only two ways you can know whether a laptop will work is:

1. Direct recommendation of someone who uses it the way you want to.
2. Try it yourself.

Agreed. The problem with #1 is that unless the recommendation comes from
someone who just bought a new computer, the chance that you'll be able to
buy exactly the same computer are slim. These things change seemingly by
the week. The manufacturers test them with common software and hardware
but not with audio hardware or applications. So a computer that isn't broken
for 99.99% of the customers will be broken for YOU.

I'm a big supporter of #2, but it's not always easy to recover from a mistake.
Most dealers, both storefront and mail order, charge a restocking fee for
returning a laptop computer other than if it's broken and replaced by another
of the same model. So it's likely to cost you some cash if you try it and have
a problem you can't resolve (or run out of patience before you resolve it). I
return a lot of things that I buy, but I buy nearly always from local stores so
at least I don't have to deal with packing and shipping, and can beat up on
the manager if they want to charge me money for not wanting something that
doesn't work for me.

Fortunately, today there are more off-the-rack computers that work (for audio
applications) than those that don't work, but there are always pitfalls, and
everything has a limit, which you may eventually find if you push it hard enough.
