They are limited to audio frequencies, and cannot do DC measurements or
see signals into MHz frequencies, but when used with a decent sound
card, they can be pretty nifty.
You _will_ need to see signals into the MHz region.... with high speed
op-amps now you may need to see a lot higher in order to see circuit
instabilities.

I totally agree. I am almost always using high-speed opamps in
my designs, with gain bandwidth products that go into the megahertz.
It's important to see what's happening in the circuit way beyond
20-40 KHz.

Also, it's good to have an oscilloscope that can see DC, to check
for DC offsets in the signal, low-frequency bias oscillations,
and other things.

Just earlier today, I was looking at the PicoScope 22xx models:

These are basic, entry-level products. The least expensive
(model 2203, for about $260) has just a 5 MHz bandwidth. Anyone
have any opinion whether this is sufficient? Are there any other
"show-stopper" limitations, in your opinion? Or really good reasons
to spend more for the 2204 or 2205?

You can get a Rigol 50MHz (1GSa/s) DSO new from eBay for around $500.
They are excellent value for money.
