That's true; you have to build your own. I should have
prefaced my rant with "for homebrewers only".
And then added some caveats about weight and thermal
inefficiency, etc. - *not* unimportant things for
real-world use.
But if the goal is complete theoretical monotonicity
down through the electronic and electromagnetic layers,
there are only even more difficult options to achieve it.
You can get monotonicity with push-pull class-A tube designs. With somewhat
more difficulty, you can get it from push-pull class-A solid-state designs
too. Both bypass most of the major signal-related problems of SET
ampifiers -- but are even worse about heat, bulk, power consumption, etc..
100% of what is wrong with single ended tube amplifiers is the output
transformer.
Running push-pull circuits class A is just fine, and lets you get away
from all the nastiness that results from DC on the transformer primary.
There's a reason that push-pull designs became immediately popular when
they first came out in the 1920s... and that reason is actually improved
monotonicity due to more linear transformers due to the transformer not
having to be designed for massive DC offset.
From my standpoint the only good thing to come out of the SET craze is agreat deal more interest in homebrew electronics. And I think that's
a great thing that more than makes up for anything else.
