"Constant charge" seems capable of multiple meanings.
And on Usenet, too. First time that's ever happened!
In the sense that it's used for electrostatic speakers, the
diaphragm is charged up to a high voltage through a large
resistor.
Or the coating has an extremely high resistivity.
The resistor is so large that the diaphagm's charge doesn't
change as it moves between dual (fore and aft) stators.
Typical modern condenser microphones have a single stator,
Typical, yes. But some have dual diaphragms -- such as the Pearls I used to
own.
and charge varies with diaphragm motion.
Uh, no it doesn't.
Not a big deal with the small motions of a mic's diaphragm,
but not fundamentally linear; rather it's square-law.
Constant charge has nothing to do with the mic or speaker's configuration.
I'd never heard of this meaning of constant charge being used
before the QUAD. Could you point me towards any other info?
Sure. The JansZen tweeters were constant-charge. I'm pretty sure of it.
