That was the place! As a kid growing up, my two favorite catalogs was
theirs and Lafayette Radio. Lots of geeky stuff for a kid to get into.

The one Holy Grail that I still have not located is the schematic to the
Lafayette Phone Modulator. I gave mine away in 1972, and I have always
regretted it. It used a 12AX7, 12AU7, and 50C5 tube, and was screen
modulated. The kid next door and I, along with his dad that worked at
General Electric, did some mods on it and used to play "radio station". It
was pretty hi-fi in those times. The only down side was that it was AC/DC,
meaning that if you plugged in the line cord backwards into the wall, you
had 110VAC on the chassis and usually got bit.

I've searched for a schematic for that device and have yet to find it.
There is a Lafayette Radio on the web, in NY, but they don't answer E-mail
or letters. I would love to find a schematic and scratch build one just
for the fun of it.

But McGees was my second choice. Lots of cool stuff in their book as well.

Lots of phono modulator schematics on the web. Search for 'tube AM transmitter' and you'll get some hits. Ask on rec.antiques.radio+phono and you'll get even more. I've seen some sites with instructions to modify a basic AA5 tube radio into a transmitter--never tried it. I used my old Eico signal generator....
