In my spare time, one of the things I do is work for a UK charity called
REMAP that makes specialised aids for the disabled. I recently had a
request from a young disabled man who is learning to play a keyboard.
His left hand is normal but his right is severely distorted due to
arthritis such that he can only play one fingered with this hand and the
adjacent fingers (which he cannot move) tend to get in the way and press
adjacent keys. He asked if there were any keyboards available with wider
than normal keys - 25 to 50% wider should be sufficient. Anyone know if
such keyboards exist?
If not I guess its a case of rip his existing one apart and building a
special keyboard - not a prospect I relish.
I think you're approaching this from the wrong angle. His LH can play
normally - why should it be handicapped by a "dumbed down" keyboard?
Anyway, you'll find it very hard to modify a standard keyboard to
wider keys - think how the key contacts are laid out. And he'd be
restricted to only being able to play this one special keyboard.
If it's just a matter of keeping the extra fingers out of the way he'd
be better off with some sort of strapping. Or if this would cause him
pain, make a glove with a suitable peg attachment.
Or maybe use a MIDI bass pedalboard for the right hand - option of feet or
hand playing. These are quite widely spaced.
