I'd prefer a standalone equipment, not an interface for PC.

If I was looking for that now, I'd look at the Yamaha AW1600. It's a
replacement for (and significant upgrade to) the AW16G which I have now.
- 8 mic inputs with phantom power.
- 24 bit/44.1kHz
- USB connection to PC to transfer the tracks when you get home.

You don't really need 96kHz sampling rate, but the headroom that 24 bits
gives you is indispensable for the unpredictable world of live recording.
I believe many posters to this newsgroup routinely record at 24/44.1 or
24/48.

If you decide to use the AW1600 for mixing or processing, it's quite
powerful for a machine in its price range; for example you can have a
compressor on every channel as well as 4-band fully parametric EQ.

The mic inputs no better than you'd expect for a machine of that class
(unless they've improved since the AW16G) but if you're using condenser
mics you shouldn't have a noise problem.

However, the AW 1600's user interface may be quite difficult to master
for the technically challenged. I don't own one but helped a musician
(not of the PC generation) use the machine and he found the manual
and interface hell to comprehend. I found the interface to be rather
clumsy at best with all that stuff crammed into those pages and pages of
tiny screens. IMHO there's so much stuff in that box that it's absolutely
overwhelming to a novice.
However, I will agree that it seems to provide a lot of bang for the buck.
