If I was looking for that now, I'd look at the Yamaha AW1600. It's a
replacement for (and significant upgrade to) the AW16G which I have now.
- 8 mic inputs with phantom power.
- 24 bit/44.1kHz
- USB connection to PC to transfer the tracks when you get home.

You don't really need 96kHz sampling rate, but the headroom that 24 bits
gives you is indispensable for the unpredictable world of live recording.
I believe many posters to this newsgroup routinely record at 24/44.1 or
24/48.

If you decide to use the AW1600 for mixing or processing, it's quite
powerful for a machine in its price range; for example you can have a
compressor on every channel as well as 4-band fully parametric EQ.

The mic inputs no better than you'd expect for a machine of that class
(unless they've improved since the AW16G) but if you're using condenser
mics you shouldn't have a noise problem.
