Correct. Sort of. Sometimes they do, sometimes the mouse doesn't work

directly to the new PC. But given that in this configuration, they
work most of the time, it could be a fluke or brain damage when I
observed that the mouse didn't work.

If they're not working correctly at all times when the switch isn't
even being used, it would suggest the USB-PS/2 adapter might be
misbehaving.

I was looking at a manual (all hardware, with a knob) switch that
would probably do the job. It was only $20, but then I'd have to get
another $30 or so worth of cables along with it, so I passed. But I
might investigate that approach when I get home. At least that way, I
could positively connect the peripherals to the computer that was
about to boot up.

Whether it'll be happy if they're disconnected and then reconnected
without a reboot, I dunno. I've never tried that but it's easy enough
to check. I suspect that this Linksys switch might put a "dummy" in
place of the mouse and keyboard when they're switched in the other
direction so the unused computer doesn't lose its place (or its mind).

Right. I tend to think that a lot of KVM issues come down the quality
of the dummy, but it's not a thing that you can easily make
generalizations about.

In spite of the presence of the dummy, one thing that can help with
KVM switches is to make sure the switch is set so that the computer
and Mackie can each see the real keyboard and mouse (rather than the
dummy) at the point at which they respectively boot. Of course, you
might well be doing that already.

The fully manual switch sounds good, as you say, so long as your kit
is happy with the disconnection.
