I bought them from a studio out of Pacitic beach. They looked like
they got hit by a few drummers that bad aim or too many beers. Or
maybe both. They used to be fine. atleast sound fine, until a few
months ago. I will call sennheiser.
They all start to do that... the voice coil gets deformed or the glue
that holds it to the diaphragm goes bad, and the voice coil gets stuck
against the magnet. Suddenly the diaphragm is very damped at low
frequencies and all your bottom end goes away.
When Sennheiser sold replacement diaphragm kits, they were twenty bucks
and you could swap them out in about half an hour without even taking the
capsule out of the mike. But now you have to replace the whole element
and it'll cost around $200.
On the other hand, you can't get anything that sounds like a 421 for $200.
It's really a great mike.
