In article <7b908f3e-f8c5-45ca-b8b5-

Pull up a plug-in and grab a preset of a certain function and then
examine the settings they suggest as a starting point. Naturally
there are lots of reasons not to rely on presets, but I've always
found that they've usually been programmed by someone who knew what to
do with it and wasn't flying blindly. You'll see that some settings
have longer attacks to let the sound's transient attack come through
before the compression kicks in, which is helpful for drums and not
really for vocals. And that usually settings with higher ratios are
for more aggressive compression, in that a rap vocal often gets a high
ratio while a jazz singer usually gets a low ratio (ratio being how
far it's pushed down for every db it goes over the threshold) Just
some general starting points to learn from and go from there.
If you take any compressor plug-in that has settings for different
kinds of singers and different instruments just take a look at them as
a reference. Again, like anything else (like the internet) take it
with a grain of salt, but they can be helpful references for what the
different ratios and attacks and releases are good for.
I do start with the presets!
Based on the other suggestions, I ordered the book "Mixing with your
mind." May as well keep studying.
But while I wait for that to arrive, let me ask you another question.
When do you rely on compression and when do you rely on riding the mixer
gain on a track? Any thoughts on that?
