Many of you may have been frustrated when what appears to be a common
Chinese platform was adopted by Liteon, Sony, et al. This platform has
chassis reduced in size and weight, using a phenolic circuit board. While
the Liteon and associated burners are very versatile, there have been
complaints about
1. Burn quality
2. Mechanism longevity.
3. Operating noise
The operating noise appears to be due to the substition of the previous
discrete cooling fan with some kind of solution integrated into the
mechanism. It's so noisy it might be gear driven, though I do not yet have a
broken drive to dissect.
Because of the approaching obsolesence of IDE burners, I reexamined
available product offerings. I am happy to say that the Pioneer DVR-115D
offers some hope:
1. It is larger than the Liteon "common platform", and heavier
2. It has a glass epoxy board
3. It is quieter, though not as quiet as the old designs that had a discrete
cooling fan.
4. It uses a liquid crystal beam director, which is faster and more accurate
than the galvanometer movement used by the other makers.
The reviewers at
http://www.cdfreaks.com/reviews/Pioneer-DVR-115D-DVD-Burner-Reviewactually
perform burn quality tests that, while not performed with laboratory
equipment, do provide some insight into real-world readability of the
product disk. They found the DVR-115D to be outstanding in this regard.
It doesn't write DVD-RAM, but this is a small loss, considering that this
burner provides a better burn. I bought four from Newegg.

Plextor. Awesome.
'Nuff said.
But Pioneer is a good choice, too. I personally don't care about DVD-RAM
as DVD-R or +R discs are cheap enough now.

What program is available on MAC to check errors in a disk these days.
I have been using Jam to put it together and toast to burn (though
Jam). I can only assume that the disk burned right - is there a way to
verify more then just the toast rarify check... or is the toast one
good enough?
A good burning program, like Nero, has the option you can implement to
do an error check after burn before finalising. It will kick it out if
it doesn't pass. And will tell you the nature of the error, I believe.
Haven't had a problem yet, so don't actually know. I use good discs I guess.

Which brand and which disc of theirs do you use?

Sorry, should have typed CD-/+R not DVD.
