I have a 24 channel Soundcraft Spirit board. I'm having a problem with
the main mix monitors. The speakers cut out and crackle unless the
volume of the board is cranked past the halfway point. Even then it's
sketchy. I took the amp and speakers to the shop, and there's nothing
wrong with them.
I already sprayed cleaner in the speaker outs of the board to no
avail.
I don't seem to have the same problem when I switch to 2 track
playback on the board. But I don't know if this is because I usually
use it for cds, which tend to have a much more consistantly louder
volume than whatever it is I'm working on (being as they are mastered
and such) which keeps the volume up past the threshold of where the
cut out begins.
I've been told it might be the op amp? The cut out happens on both
speakers intermittantly.
Any ideas? Is it something I might be able to fix myself?
First of all, have you cleaned the Insert sockets? This is by far the most
common cause of these symptoms and should be on the FAQ. Spray some good
switch cleaner in them and push a jack plug in and out several times until
they clear. You can do the same with the channel inserts to prevent this
happening in the future. This is really just routine maintenance that many
people don't do, so do it anyway.
If this doesn't sort it, you do have some kind of internal problem, quite
possibly a ribbon connector as previously suggested. It is absolutely NOT
going to be an Op-amp.
As you don't seem to get the problem on 2 track playback, it may not be the
inserts, but could just be a dirty switch. Make the problem happen and push
in and out several times all the routing switches that cut the signal when
switched - you may be able to hear the dodgy one by the way it crackles when
switched, or when gently nudged with your finger. There could be more than
one contributing to the problem. Sometimes you can get away with spraying a
little switch cleaner through the top panel to clean them, if you really
don't want to remove the bottom panel, but I wouldn't if it was someone
elses desk.
It is quite easy to get the bottom plate off to access everything, don't
forget the screws on the top panel too. You can clean the ribbon connections
by gently lifting them off and putting them back again, making sure that all
the pins go back in the correct holes or you could cause a lot of damage.
(A good tip is not to remove the plugs from the pins completely, so you know
they have all gone back in the right place).
Gareth.
