A cheap, and mebbe not so rich, solution is to print the best string
sounds from a synth or sampler that you can borrow or rent, and then
overdub a real violin player multiple times using a different mic or mic
position each time. Then mix them together.
This also works with horn sections, adding e.g. a real trumpet, and
sometimes it works quite well.
Let's face it, it's all about budget. And the availability of competent
string players.
I'd like to throw in here that I really enjoy musicians. Ironically, the
people I typically least enjoy recording too often are classical
players. Of course this doesn't always happen, but too often I bump into
holier than thou attitudes. Of course, I could care less if they can
play. But usually, the holier than thou attitudes accompany sucky
performances. Sorry, the mics and the hard drive don't lie.
Another bitch I bump into with classical musicians concerns creativity.
I had a piano player in this week who could read and play. But the
client who'd hired her decided spur of the moment that the piece also
could use a little piano solo. And, after hearing her suck for too long,
I ended up having to suggest to her what to play. To her credit, she
admitted that she sucked at soloing. What an embarrassing situation.
Hey, I also had a bass player in this week who'd never used a tuner. And
he could NOT figure it out, a simple $20 make the LED light green
Sabine. Help me, I'm gettin old ;>
