They still do. Maybe 75% of the movie screens in the country are showing
SR soundtracks. The other 25% is a mixture of digital formats and Academy
Mono.
All of the digital systems today use an SR optical soundtrack as a backup.
In the case of a Dolby Digital film, you will normally see it briefly fail
over to the SR track two or three times in the course of a feature film.
If the system is properly aligned, the failover is almost unnoticeable.
Note that of those 75%, a whole hell of them are actually showing SR
soundtracks decoded by Dolby A decoders. This is shameful.
