Is
there a flexible cantilever system I could hook to the back of the desk --
it has a steel frame -- that would arch over the 21" CRTs? Are there any
monitors that are particularly suited for such a mounting arrangement?

Are these audio monitors for casual or critical listening? If the
former then why not just put up wall mounts for small speakers such as
M-Audio StudioPro 3s? If the latter I would be inclined to retire the
21" CRTs in favor of 20" LCDs for the following reasons:

LCD vs CRT
8" vs 20" deep
12 lbs vs 67 lbs
50W vs 150~300W

The savings on electrical consumption alone could easily repay the
costs of new LCDs in approximately 2 yrs. Stacking two LCDs high and
two wide would allow a more reasonable positioning of the audio
monitors for better acoustic results.

I don't see your calc. The monitors, P1130's, are among the greenest CRTs
ever made:

Electricity here is about $.10/KWH.
There are about 180 business days in a year.
4CRTs X 8 hours/day X 180days X 135 watts/CRT = 777.605 KWH over one year.
Over two years, the operating cost per above is $155.52. But actually, the
cost, is much less, because while I'm always tuned to the news/market, etc.,
I am not a professional sound person.

I'd love to have LCDs, but I prefer very large displays. The cost of
replacing these monitors with greater pixel count is around $500 per unit.
