Both are excellent mikes. The M-296 is more beamy than the C-617, which
you might like in a Jecklin disc but probably won't like for A-B stereo.
The C-617 uses a 1/2" measurement microphone capsule. Similar mikes
have been sold by B&K and ACO, but the C-617 is less expensive than most
of those, and sounds great.
Beamy?
I didn't hear any beams on the one they sent me. Bright, yes, but not beamy.
It's not _very_ beamy. But the 1/2" measurement capsules are so omni, you
can talk into the back of it or into the front of it and not be able to
tell the difference at all. You can tell with a triangle, though... until
you put the bullet-shaped thing on the front and then you can't even tell
with a triangle. It's eerie, it's so omni.
The M-296 is pretty omni... it's way way more omni than a 414 in omni mode,
way more omni than a 635A, and even more omni than a 1" measurement mike.
But the 1/2" measurement mikes... they are so omni it's not funny.
