I just purchased the Behringer UBB1002 Eurorack. I have
tested two mics on the mixer/console. The mixer was then
connected to my computer sound card.
On two separate test with two different mic, I noticed
that I had to turn the volume/db pot up all the way to
get a nice even sound. The great thing was that there
was no clipping, but I wondered why I had to turn the
sound up so much.
There are four controls that control the volume of a mic on that mixer:
(1) There is a channel mic preamp gain control on the channel strip with a
white top. In your case it should probably be full clockwise or close to it
for a dynamic mic, particularly if the mic is not used very close to your
mouth.
(2) There is the channel fader - a linear control. Normal setting would be
near the zero mark, but it is OK to go further.
(3) There is the Main fader, another linear control. Normal setting would be
near the zero mark, but its OK to go further.
(4) There is probably a volume control on whatever you hook the main outputs
of the mixer to. In your case this would be a line input on your computer's
sound card.
Are *all* of these 4 controls set to max?
I think that some people have the perception that a piece of equipment is
straining when its level controls are set to max. In fact most circuits in
a piece of equipment work about the same, regardless of the gain setting. It
is very loud signals (which you obviously don't have right now) not maximum
gain settings that has any potential to cause stress.
