HeadRoom amps can easily cost more than the STAX. I can
conceive of someone who buys into HeadRoom's schtick
buying both the STAX and the HeadRoom amp.

Why? A HeadRoom amplifier can't drive the STAX earphones.

Why not?

Because they're electrostatic. They require several hundreds volts to
polarize them, plus an audio signal of comparable magnitude. A HeadRoom
can't provide either. That's what the amp that comes with the earphones
does.
