If data is mission critical, you should _never_ rely on _one_ tape.
You should not rely on _one_ harddisk either. Currently a harddisks
are cheaper, faster and more reliable than DLT cartridges. Therefore
they are a perfect medium for archiving mission critical data.
A file can be consided to be backed up if three copies exist, two
of those more than a mile apart.

My backup regimen consists of daily backups on two hard drives in
two different computesr and ~monthly backups onto a USB harddrive
that sits
on a bookshelf. Ideally, yes, one of these would be far enough away to
survive a house fire or somesuch.

If you want to store data on a distant location a web hosting service
might be a solution. You can get over 1TB of storage for only a few $
a month today. For privacy sensitive data you can use an encrypted
archive. Archives with extra copies of recorded audio won't need that.

I actually had that arrangement previously. The problem with it, for me,
was a) my upload rate is only about 512 kb/s which means it takes on the
order of >1 day to get everything uploaded, and b) the ISP I used (1&1)
was always prematurely dropping the line (via sftp).

Believe me, if I had a faster, more reliable way to do this, I would.
