Despite being nominally a bass instrument, the bassoon doesn't have much
low end either, so I doubt that would be a problem anyway. Most of the
sound energy and the characteristic colour of the instrument is in the
harmonics.

Are you kidding? I have a bit of bassoon solo here with notes at just
over 50Hz, and not weedy subharmonics either - full strength.
You sure that's not a contra-bassoon?

Bassoon goes down to about 58Hz before using the extension, IIRC.
